Interview Techniques
Preparing for Your Interview
Competition is very keen for good jobs; therefore, the first impression you make with a potential employer is critical. We have prepared a list of important suggestions for you to consider that will guarantee a good first impression.
Wearing the proper attire to a personal interview always important. We suggest that you make a decision about what you plan to wear the evening before a scheduled interview. This will give you an opportunity to handle any last-minute details.
We recommend that you wear a conservative, well-coordinated suit or dress. Casual attire, like sunglasses, hats, jeans, and sun dresses may not be suitable for your prospective employer.
Women should always wear makeup, jewelry and perfume conservatively for a job interview. Dress shoes and hosiery will help you make that all important first impression.
Gentlemen should always be clean-shaven and neatly groomed. Your attention to details such as shined shoes and freshly pressed shirts, slacks and coat, can only enhance your employment possibilities.
Chewing gum or smoking during your interview may give your perspective employer the impression that you are not serious or have a casual attitude about your career.
Remember you never have a second chance to make a good, first impression.
Before your interview begins
Knowing the exact location of the interview and were you should park should help you to arrive promptly. If your interview is scheduled in an unfamiliar area, you might want to drive by the location prior to the day of your appointment. Being prompt for each scheduled interview is an important key to making a lasting impression on your prospective employer. Should you find that you are going to be unavoidably late for an appointment, call your staffing consultant. DO NOT CALL THE EMPLOYER. Your staffing consultant will contact the employer for you.
If a prospective employer has asked that you bring a current resume to the interview, ask your staffing consultant to assist you with form, style and production of copies.
If you arrive early for a scheduled appointment, or if you are asked to wait before your interview, we suggest that you take this opportunity to relax and review your resume material. In addition, it is advisable that you DO NOT discuss your interview or the position you are being considered for with the receptionist or others in the lobby area. Project a positive image while you are waiting.
Your Application Form
Many employers will ask you to complete an application from to go into their personnel files. Because this application may be referred to extensively during your interview, close attention to details such as dates, names and rates of pay is important. Since such questions as telephone numbers, addresses, etc. may be difficult to remember, we suggest you write this information down and bring it with you to the interview. It might be helpful to have a completed sample application with you at all times
Include any special skills or qualifications which might be beneficial to your prospective employer on either your personal resume or the company application. When filling out the application, we recommend that you take a positive attitude about your qualifications and the reason you feel you should be offered the position. It is not necessary for you to exaggerate your qualifications; however, you should also be careful and not sell yourself short. Never, under any circumstances, falsify the information on your resume or your application. Be certain to write legibly.
The interview
When you meet your interviewer, it is proper to offer a handshake. This cordial form of etiquette is considered acceptable to both men and women. A firm handshake will help you both relax. Waiting to be offered a chair when you enter your interviewing area will show a polite concern for your potential employer, and will also reflect positively on you.
Your attentiveness and interest in the interviewer is a fundamental key to a successful interview. Always remember to allow your interviewer the opportunity to ask you questions and tell you about the position and the company. You should however, take an opportunity to ask any unanswered questions before the interview ends. It is advisable to take a note pad and pen with you. When your interviewer asks questions, do not be afraid to pause and consider your answer. Factual and specific answers are always appreciated. Emphasize your accomplishments, but never attempt to "over impress" the interviewer. Avoid negative comments, especially regarding former employers. You should also be cautious that you don't stray from the subject or talk too much. Some potential employers may ask you to take a skills test. Even though your staffing consultant has already given you a similar test, we recommend that you oblige the interviewer with your cooperation. After your interview is complete, we suggest that you thank the interviewer for considering you for the position, and express your appreciation for the time taken for the interview. If you want the job, let them know it.
After The Interview
We ask that you call your Staffing Consultant immediately following your interview. By giving your consultant your impressions while they are still fresh in your mind, we will have a better understanding of your needs and potential.
We hope these suggestions will benefit you in your search for a profitable and rewarding career. The management and staff of Clark Personnel Service appreciates the opportunity to serve you.
