Power Resume
A resume is a summary of your skills, experiences, education and accomplishments. The primary purpose of a resume is to secure an interview.
About resume content:
There is no such thing as a perfect resume. There is no universally accepted resume that is considered the perfect one. You write for your audience such as the person who interviews you and the company that creates the job for which you are hired.
On resume format:
There are three basic formats: chronological, functional and hybrid. Chronological lists your experiences in a reverse chronological format; functional presents a summary of your experiences and accomplishments without listing specific details; and hybrid is a combination of the chronological and functional resume.
On resume preparation:
If you do not own a word processor then have your resume professionally prepared. The appearance of the resume is a very important factor. This creates the first impression of you and many times the appearance of the resume, in addition to content, is the determining factor of whether or not you receive an interview with the company
On length of resume:
Attempt to keep the resume to two pages or less. In rare instances when you have to include very detailed information about experience or education it may be necessary for the resume to exceed two pages.
The main objective:
Is to sell yourself and get the interview. Your resume needs to be your personal marketing tool.
Things to Avoid:
*Misspelled words - Proofread it and then let someone else proofread your resume. You would be surprised at the number of resumes containing misspelled words and typographical errors.
*Unexplained gaps in your employment history - make sure all time is accounted for.
*Stating your salary - It is better to discuss salary in the interview because you may be too high or too low in listing salary and it may be a disqualifying factor. It is better to leave it off the resume and discuss in the interview.
*Listing general references - Do so following the interview so that you can be job specific and list those individuals that would provide the best reference for you.
Summary:
The resume is an introduction that is supposed to create a desire on the part of a firm or individual to want to see you personally. A good resume will keep selling for you throughout the interview and negotiation process. Your resume is your personal advertisement. Present your qualifications in a manner that is focused, professional and positive. Be aggressive, be confident and be honest.
