Writing a Letter of Reference
FIRST: Copy or print this blank guide for each person writing a Recommendation Letter for you.
SECOND: Carefully fill in the blank areas on the guide, attach a copy of your resume, and give them to each reference person. This becomes a helpful guide to your references for writing an effective recommendation letter on your behalf.
Remember: Each guide will be a little different for each person you ask to write a recommendation letter. What goes in these blanks depends on your relationship with each person.
INSTRUCTIONS for the person writing the recommendation letter:

1. In the first paragraph, state that this is a letter of recommendation for:
(job hunter's name), who is seeking a position as:
(job title, or kind of work sought).
2. In the second paragraph please state the nature of our relationship (supervisor, colleague, long-time personal friend, teacher, co-worker, etc.), how LONG you've known me, and the nature of the work or projects or other experience that we shared.

3. In the third paragraph please mention some of my skills, talents, abilities, or personal qualities, and describe one or two primary accomplishments you believe would be interesting to the employer because they demonstrate skills needed for the work I (job hunter) NOW want.

(Note: The job-hunter should point out the relevant skills and some accomplishments they'd like mentioned, but the Reference Person is the one who actually writes the letter.)
